Comparative literature professor Dezso Benedek disputes the allegations and asked for a hearing before a faculty committee, as outlined in the University System Board of Regents tenure-revocation policy.
Under Regents policy, UGA President Michael Adams has the authority to fire a tenured faculty member, but only for just cause and only after a formal hearing before a faculty committee.
No date has been set for a hearing as Benedek awaits a formal statement of charges against him.
According to another faculty committee appointed to conduct an informal inquiry into administrative allegations against Benedek, however, Benedek's tenure could be revoked on at least four grounds.
Adams could revoke Benedek's tenure because he had an actual or apparent conflict of interest, misadvised and misled UGA students, misrepresented the academic side of a study-abroad program Benedek conducts in Budapest, Hungary, and was insubordinate to higher administrators, the three-member faculty group concluded.
