UGA's study abroad numbers fall, but bouncing back

The number of college students studying abroad fell with the economy across the country last year, including at the University of Georgia.

But plenty of UGA students still are traveling the world to study, officials say.

"We did show a downward turn like many large state schools last year," said Kasee Laster, director of study abroad at UGA. "We're a little off compared to '07-'08, but we held our own."

Two years ago, UGA ranked 10th in a national study with more than 2,000 students going abroad. That total fell by less than 5 percent last year, Laster said.

A study released in September by the Forum on Education Abroad showed that 85 percent of public colleges and universities across the U.S. saw a negative impact on their study abroad programs because of the sagging economy.

Study abroad enrollment rates fell from 5 percent to 15 percent at a quarter of those schools. An additional 18 percent of schools reported even bigger drops, according to the study.

Even during the 2007-08 academic year, when more UGA students went abroad than ever, Laster said the poor economy was starting to affect the program.
